Brooklyn Flea Williamsburg, the most picturesque markets I have ever been to. If you are heading to New York and planing to do some shopping, I sincerely advise that you put Brooklyn Flea market's on your agenda. By now I have been to a fair few markets around the world, like Paris' Montmartre, Berlin's Mauerpark Flohmrkt, London's Brick Lane, and all the others in between. These markets didn't have the familiar dodgy, car boot style feel but rather a clean, small community of stall holders. Held in different locations over the weekend, it consists of mainly the same stalls so you can choose where and when best suits you. Apart from those who either love vintage/thrift finds or bargain hunters, it is a refreshing difference to shopping amongst the skyscrapers in Manhattan on Broadway or Fifth.
When I arrived at the Williamsburg markets I was blown away by the amazing location- literally on the banks of the East River overlooking mid East Manhattan. The Lafayette markets are held in Brooklyn on a school's grounds. The stalls consisted of the usual well priced vintage clothing racks, shoes and bags. Piles of knits were strewn across rugs on the ground from as little as $5. (The only thing holding me back was knowing Australia is coming in to Summer, and zero luggage space.) Fur was abundant and extremely cheap (spotted $40-$80 coats, fox tails) and vintage jewellery stalls ($15 rings -$60 bejewelled necklaces) seemed to be the most common and popular amongst shoppers. Although stall holders were not over the moon with me snapping photos, they did seem open to haggling.
The main thing Brooklyn Flea's left me feeling, was that I have to move back to New York as soon as possible, to furnish my dream light filled, loft style apartment with these market treasures as soon as humanly possible. One can only dream..
If you plan on visiting Brooklyn Flea's and need more information visit the website here, and please let me know if you found this useful at all :) These photos were taken from the Brooklyn flea markets at Lafayette on a Saturday, and Williamsburg on the Sunday.
These photos are just divine! The skyscrapers in the background make for an amazing contrast. I lost almost all of my photos from NYC!

ReplyDeleteThe Brooklyn Art Market "Artists and Fleas" is also a wonderful flea market with some great finds. http://www.artistsandfleas.com/ Great mix of vintage and young designer's work. Found a wild jumpsuit last time I was there (black fitted top and pucci esque printed elephant pants attached!) I love coming upon that find of the day! Happy fleaing!
